Joint Forum Against Sexual Violence and Harassment

The Vice-Chancellors from University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), University of Bristol, University of Bath, Bath Spa University and Presidents and Student Officers of the Students' Unions have committed their institutions to a zero-tolerance approach to sexual violence and harassment.

A joint Forum Against Sexual Violence and Harassment was established in July 2015 to support progress with the undertakings made in the joint statement.

About the Joint Forum

The Forum is chaired by Professor Judith Squires (Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bristol) and includes senior staff and officers from the universities and students’ unions and external representatives from Avon and Somerset Police, Somerset and Avon Rape and Sexual Abuse Support (SARSAS), and The Bridge.

In summary, the key aims are to:

  • have a zero-tolerance approach to sexual violence and harassment
  • promote safe space on and off campus
  • raise awareness of what we deem to be appropriate sexual conduct, and provisions for victim support
  • identify appropriate support for survivors of sexual violence and harassment.

The Forum meets quarterly and has an agreed series of projects for which it provides oversight. If you would like an update or further information, please contact Lisa Mayo on tel: +44(0)117 32 86296 or email

The Forum has welcomed the report, Changing the Culture, from the Universities UK Taskforce examining violence against women, harassment and hate crime affecting university students. Both universities are committed to working together in the coming months, and with our Students’ Unions and Forum partners, we intend to use the Taskforce Report to review and enhance existing activity. In addition, both universities are active and proud partners in the Bristol Zero Tolerance initiative, which is working towards Bristol being a city free from gender-based violence, abuse, harassment and exploitation.
