Social hackathon

Join us for an unforgettable experience of learning, collaboration and making a difference.

What is a social hackathon?

Social hackathons bring together student volunteers and local charities to solve real-world challenges through creativity, collaboration and innovation. They are a great way to learn new skills, connect with new people, and make a positive impact in a short period of time.

In teams, you'll tackle issues head-on, learn from professionals and connect with new communities across Bristol.

In the 2025/26 academic year we partnered with organisations, including Bristol City of Sanctuary, The Care Forum, Share Bristol, Children's Hospice South West and the Government Digital Service.

Design thinking training

In addition to the hackathon challenge, you'll also receive an afternoon of training on human-centred design thinking.

This training aims to improve your ability to problem solve and come up with innovative solutions – skills that will benefit you at the hackathon, on your course, in future employment, and in everyday life.

Social hackathons are open to all students. We are looking for students from a range of courses with openness, energy and an interest in social action. You don’t need previous experience in hackathons or similar events to take part.

"It gave me insight to the need for clarity, communication and empathy [...] I also learnt the need to accept help – allow people to help you see what you may not see about yourself."

What to expect

1. Team introductions and training

We'll send an email invitation to successful applicants after the application deadline.

You'll have the chance to meet your fellow teammates before the Hackathon at a training session at Frenchay Campus.

Our super friendly Community Engagement Team and Student Ventures will welcome you to training. They'll introduce you to other students and ensure training is fun, friendly and inclusive. Our events celebrate difference and no one is out of place at a Social Hackathon.

We'll also do some entrepreneurial training to make sure you're well prepared for the day.

You'll be asked to complete a pre-questionnaire, which is a requirement.

2. Ideation

On the day of the Hackathon, you'll meet a representative from the partner organisation. They'll explain what they do and what they would like your help with.

You'll then join your team to research and brainstorm ideas based on the organisation's challenges.

3. Solution finding and innovation

Teams will come back together to discuss their ideas and get feedback from the other groups and partner organisations.

4. Creation

You'll then regroup with your team to create an output that your partner organisation may be able to use. Your solution will be based on your team's research and ideas and the feedback you've had from other teams.

5. Reflection and presentation

Your team will be present your output to the organisation at the end of the Hackathon.

After the event, you'll reflect on the session and give feedback.

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance and completion, which you can share on professional platforms such as LinkedIn to showcase your contribution and enhance your CV.
