About the event
Join us for the ECRG seminar with featured speaker, Dr Jeanette Sakel, Professor of Language and Linguistics (UWE Bristol).
Abstract
Not all linguists speak a lot of languages, but some do. How do they go about language learning? Are they using insights from linguistics? Does it get easier after a while?
Combining my personal experiences of language learning and research on second language acquisition and bilingualism, I reflect on learning Mandarin Chinese from total beginner to confident speaker.
In this presentation, I will be reflecting on the process from four perspectives:
- Methods: using autoethnographic tools to explore learning and “robust” research
- Pedagogy: the role of motivation in language learning
- Applied and applicable research: signalling fluency in a second language
- Implications for language teaching and learning.
