Description

Space and place have a real impact on the construction of our identities and leadership. In this one-day workshop we intend to create a collaborative space to reflect on these relationships, stimulate new discussions and hear from expert speakers in the field.

As a starting point, the work of Caroll (2016) explores Leadership as identity looking at how leadership and identity play out in a fluid and ambiguous way. Identity is brought to the fore in considering how leadership emerges from the practice of people being connected to each other through space and place in embodied social action. Hirst and Humphreys (2020) bring identity, space, and place together through a collection of studies linking organised space and processes of identity and identification.

This contemporary interest becomes pertinent to the shifting nature of work considering the role of new, hybrid or re-purposed workspaces designed to enable interactive modes of working and the new home-based offices for remote working.

This workshop will explore how these contemporary changes in the material workplace are facilitating unanticipated identity change and leadership development.
