How to attend
The aim of the Stand Up and Be Heard workshops is to support attendees in developing their public speaking skills, understanding and overcoming fears around oral presentations, and embracing the benefits of public speaking as a transferable skill for university, life and future employment. In particular, the workshop emphasises being an authentic public speaker, moving away from the common approach that focuses on style and perfection.
The session materials are on the Study Skills Blackboard course.
Workshops
Part 1: Authentic public speaking approach
This workshop will focus on the theoretical sharing of ideas related to becoming an authentic public speaker. There will be a number of handouts for participants, based on the book: Stand Up and Be Heard: Taking the Fear out of Public Speaking at University by Dr Rob Grieve. There will also be a list of resources and further reading provided in the workshop.
Workshop objectives
To feel more confident about:
- identifying the issues associated with my fear of presentations/public speaking
- reviewing strategies that may help manage my fear of presentations/public speaking
- exploring the benefits of public speaking as a transferrable skill.
Part 2: Authentic public speaking in practice
This workshop will give you the opportunity to conduct a brief oral presentation to fellow participants from Part 1. You will be given constructive feedback and lots of encouragement along the way. Further details of this workshop will be given at the end of Part 1.
Please note you can only attend Part 2 if you have already attended Part 1 on a previous occasion.

About the Facilitator
Dr Rob Grieve, Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy, University of the West of England, is a Senior Fellow of the HEA. As a person with a mild stammer, he has faced many issues in public speaking. This has led to an increased awareness around student fears of public speaking and resulted in the facilitation of these university-wide support workshops.
