Considering university as a mature student? You’re not alone. Many people begin their university journey a little later, often alongside work, family commitments and other responsibilities. You might be looking to change career, progress in your current role, return to a long-held ambition or gain qualifications that support your future goals.

Whatever your reason for considering university now, your age and experience can be a real advantage. The skills you’ve developed through work, life and everything in between can help you make the most of your time at university.

At UWE Bristol, you'll join a diverse community of students from a wide range of backgrounds. We're here to help you understand your options, navigate the application process and feel confident about taking your next step.

Applying as a mature student

There are many routes into higher education, and mature students join us with a wide range of qualifications and experiences.

Entry requirements vary by course, so it is important to check the relevant course page. Most undergraduate degrees require a combination of UCAS Tariff points and any course-specific requirements, such as GCSE English and Mathematics or particular subjects.

UCAS Tariff points can be awarded for a variety of Level 3 qualifications, including Access to Higher Education Diplomas, BTECs, T Levels and A-levels. Some courses may also require evidence of recent study or specific subject knowledge.

When you apply, make sure you include all relevant qualifications, work experience and skills that support your application.

Access to Higher Education Diplomas

Access to Higher Education(HE) Diplomas are Level 3 qualifications designed for adults returning to education and provide a recognised route into university study.

A-levels

A-levels can be studied through further education colleges or distance learning providers and are another route to university. In many cases, you can apply to university while you are still completing your qualifications.
