The UWE Bristol Doctoral Academy develops postgraduate research strategy and policies, and, through a single point of contact, provides dedicated support for everyone involved in postgraduate research at the University – research degree candidates, supervisors, examiners and university services.

The Doctoral Academy is part of the Research and External Engagement (REE) service and provides the University's external postgraduate researcher (PGR) interface with partners, both within and outside academia. It focuses on a diversity of doctoral pathways based on real-world challenges that help UWE Bristol deliver Strategy 2030.

The Academic Director of the UWE Bristol Doctoral Academy, Dr Bernhard Gross, champions the cause of postgraduate researchers and their supervisors across the University.

The Head of the Doctoral Academy is Vicky Nash who manages the Doctoral Academy Hub, an experienced and integrated team who provide support for postgraduate research across all the colleges, and includes college-facing staff. The Doctoral Academy Hub manages the whole PGR journey from recruitment through to final examination, including support for the PGR committees.

The Doctoral Academy Sub-Committee (DASC) is a forum for the development of postgraduate research strategy, regulation and policy. College Research Degree Committees (CRDCs) oversee the delivery of PGR in colleges and contribute to DASC. The Research Degrees Award Board (RDAB) oversees the examination and award of research degrees.

We run a skills development programme of workshops to help researchers develop a wide variety of skills. These workshops are free of charge if you are a registered PGR and are also a great way to meet PGRs from across the university.

The UWE Bristol DocSoc is a PGR-led society that runs a variety of activities. There are PGR reps on the CRDCs, the DASC and UWE Bristol’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee.
