Way 2 learn: prison education initiative
Improving access to education for prisoners through a new model of in-cell learning.
Improving access to education in prisons
In response to growing challenges in re-engaging prisoners with traditional classroom education, Way 2 Learn offers a flexible, accessible alternative.
Developed by PeoplePlus in collaboration with UWE Bristol, this initiative not only reflects our commitment to inclusive and accessible education, but also demonstrates how innovative delivery can rebuild lives, raise aspirations, and contribute to safer, more hopeful prison environments.

Programme delivery
The programme includes a wide range of subjects, from core skills and employability to mental health and disability awareness.
Learners can access course material independently in-cell, through video content and workbooks. This approach allows individuals to learn at their own pace, in their own space – on their own terms.
Certification and recognition
Within two years, more than 13,000 certificates have been awarded. For many participants, this is their first experience of formal educational achievement.
Upon completion of the course, learners receive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, giving them formal recognition and the opportunity to pursue further learning or employment on release.
Some prisons hold certification events to recognise these milestones, which has helped strengthen relationships between prisoners and staff, building a sense of community.
