Library resources for Film

Use Library Search to find:

  • books, magazines, DVDs and all other physical material held at the three UWE Bristol libraries
  • a vast amount of online content such as e-books and journal articles.

Journals and magazines (print and online)

These provide information on specialist topics and can contain more up to date information than books. Relevant titles for Film include Adaptation, Aesthetica, American Cinematographer, Creative Review, Millenium Film Journal (MFJ), Journal of British Cinema and Television, Screen International, and Sight and Sound.

Many journals and magazines are available online, but some are also in print in the Library. Library Search or library staff can assist with helping you locate the journals in each library or online.

Databases provide reliable information from collections of journal articles, images, audio and film, and more.

Databases for Film

Art and Architecture Source is a database of full-text journal articles on a wide range of subjects. Coverage includes film, cinema and cinematography journals.

Bloomsbury Video Library (formerly known as Artfilms Digital) includes global content from independent filmmakers and award-winning production companies.

Box of Broadcasts is a service which allows you to request recordings of upcoming TV and Radio programmes and watch archived broadcasts online.

British Pathé is a newsreel archive with over 80,000 films spanning the years 1896 to 1978. It includes footage from around the globe of major events, famous faces, fashion trends, travel, science and culture.

Cinema Projectionist is a digital archive and website on the history of cinema projection in Britain.

JSTOR contains full-text academic journal articles on a wide range of subjects. Coverage includes film studies, media and cinematography publications.

Kanopy is a streaming service providing access to films and documentaries. Content includes major blockbusters and films from the Criterion collection.

Manchester Film Studies is a collection of e-books and one journal from prominent authors in the field of film.

News on Screen is a database of 180,000 cinemagazine and newsreel stories linked to production documents and films.

Screen Studies includes specialist collections, over 300 scripts and critical writing on film (including Bloomsbury and Faber Screenplays and Criticism, BFI Film Classics, BFI Film Studies and Filmmaking).

Screen Online features hundreds of biographies, articles and information about British film and television from the British Film Institute National Archive.

World Cinema Collection is a collection of films from award winning directors. Coverage includes films from the silent era through to twentieth century, as well as contemporary films from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America.
