The Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics has been awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze award, recognising our support of gender equality.

Athena SWAN Bronze award logoThe Athena SWAN Charter recognises commitment to the advancement of gender equality in academia, including professional and support roles. The Department was awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze Award in April 2015, and this was renewed in 2019.

Supporting women in STEM

Department activities

Ways the Department is supporting women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM):

  • The Department is leading the skills development work for the initiative for Digital Engineering Technology and Innovation, and is running a Diversity Demonstrator for the West of England. 
  • Women into Engineering school outreach events
  • The Department is a signatory of the Tomorrow's Engineers Code, and is supporting the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Ten Steps in the Department and in industry.
  • Supporting staff and students to attend events run by professional bodies e.g. the Women’s Engineering Society
  • Aiming to ensure that we represent the Department accurately in terms of gender balance in our print and web media, and celebrate the achievements of our female students and staff equally with our male students and staff
  • Supporting the UWE Women Researchers’ Mentoring Network

London Mathematical Society Good Practice Scheme

London Good Practice Scheme logoThe Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics has signed up to the five principles laid out in the London Mathematical Society Good Practice Scheme:

  • a robust organisational framework to deliver equality of opportunity and reward
  • appointment, promotion and selection processes and procedures that encourage men and women to apply for academic posts at all levels
  • departmental structures and systems that enable men and women to progress and continue in their careers
  • departmental organisation, structure, management arrangements and culture that are open, inclusive and transparent and encourage the participation of all staff 
  • flexible approaches and provisions that encompass the working day, the working year and a working life and enable individuals, at all career and life stages, to maximise their contribution to mathematics, their department and institution.
