Pharos printing system

UWE Bristol offers a chargeable student printing system called Pharos. This is created automatically as part of your student computer account.

Add money to your print account, log in to your UWE Card account using your UWE Bristol username and password.

Pharos printers are located in all libraries, learning zones and some open access areas and computer labs. The Frenchay Library has a large scale printer on Level 2 in the Print Hub.

Printing and photocopying costs

Black and white A4 and A3 printing is free.

Please note: the Colour Print Queue COLOURprinting will charge 15p per page by default, irrespective of the page content.

Plotter printing for CATE

Important note: these plotter facilities are only for use by CATE students. Students from other colleges do not have the plotter print queues setup on their accounts and are unable to print to these devices.

  1. Log onto a UWE Bristol computer and open your document.
  2. Select File and then Print.
  3. Under Printer, select the print queue:
    • BWprinting – black and white
    • COLOURprinting – colour
  4. Check the other options, such as paper size, orientation, and margins.
  5. Once everything is correct, select Print.

The print job will be sent to the print queue. You must log in to a printer and release the job to print it.

Please note: if print jobs are not printed within eight hours, they will be removed from the queue.

  1. Log in to https://printme.uwe.ac.uk/ with your UWE Bristol username and password.
  2. Select Upload and find the file you wish to print on your device.
  3. Select Open.

All printing defaults to black and white and double-sided:

  • If you are satisfied with these settings and ready to print, proceed to step six.
  • If you want to change any print setting, continue to the next step.
  1. Select the print job you wish to change by clicking on it.
  2. Go to the Print Options section in the bottom right corner and change the settings as needed (for example, Color for colour printing).
    Please note: changes save automatically.
  3. Go to any student printer and log in with your UWE Bristol username and password (or swipe your UWE Bristol card if that option is available).
  4. Select the job you wish to print from the Print Release list (the cost is listed next to each job).
  5. Select Print.

Send one page as a test print.

If this page prints out incorrectly, check all your settings and send another test print once you are happy.

If you believe printer has a fault and is causing the print to fail, please visit the nearest Library Desk for assistance.

Printing is set to single-sided by default.

The way to choose double-sided printing is different depending on the program you are using.

Windows - Microsoft Office

  1. Select File, then Print.
  2. From the Printer drop-down menu, select Printer Properties.

Windows - Adobe

  1. Select File, then Print.
  2. The next step depends on the software you are using:
    • Acrobat: Select Properties (to the right of the print queue)
    • InDesign: Select Printer (bottom left corner of the window)
    • Illustrator: Select Setup… (bottom left corner of the window)
    • Photoshop: Select Print Settings (under the print queue)
  3. In the Printing Shortcuts tab, from the Print on both sides ;drop-down menu, select Yes, flip over or Yes, flip up.
  4. Click OK, then click Print.

Mac - Microsoft Office

  1. Select File and Print.

Mac - Adobe

  1. Select File and Print.
  2. The next step depends on the software you are using:
    • Acrobat: Select Properties (to the right of the print queue)
    • InDesign: Select Printer (bottom left corner of the window)
    • Illustrator: Select Setup… (bottom left corner of the window)
    • Photoshop: Select Print Settings (under the print queue)
  3. Select Show Details, then Layout from the drop-down menu. Then from the Two-Sided drop-down menu, select Long-Edge binding or ShortEdge binding.
  4. Click Print, then Print again.

Double-sided printing guide (PDF)

Printers are located in all libraries and most open access areas.

  1. Log on to the printer using your UWE Bristol username and password (or swipe your UWE Bristol ID Card if that option is available).
  2. Select the job you wish to print from the Print Release list (the cost is listed next to each job).
  3. Click Print.

Your job will be printed, and the cost will be deducted from your Pharos account.

Please note: if you send a colour print job but log on to a black-and-white printer, you will not see your job available for printing.

Printing errors

  • If your print job comes out incorrectly, please bring it to the nearest Library Desk as soon as possible. Do not attempt to print again, as doing so may result in an additional charge to your account.
  • If it is determined that the printer is at fault, we will reprint your document at no extra charge.

Important note: we can only reprint jobs and cannot credit Pharos accounts.

Large scale printing

Large scale printers can be found in the following Print Hubs:

  • Frenchay Library, Level 2
  • Frenchay, N Block.

If you need further support, please ask at the Library Helpdesk on Level 2.

Large Scale printing guide

To print from the Large Scale Printer in Frenchay Library, the job must be sent as a PDF file.

Firstly, please leave plenty of time to print off your work.

  1. Save the document as a PDF, open it in Adobe Acrobat and go to File and then Print.
  2. Under Printer, select the Large Format print queue, it will be called LargeFormatLibFR.
  3. In the Properties window, select the Paper/Quality tab, then click Document Size, then More… where you can select the desired print size from a drop-down list (A2, A1, A0).
  4. To ensure that the job does not print stripey, users should change the image quality:
    • On the Properties window, select the Paper/Quality tab.
    • Then in the Print Quality section, move the slider to the middle, between Speed and Quality. Users can select the highest quality but the middle option works just as well.
  5. Press OK.
  6. Then select Print.

Releasing the documents

  1. Go to the print release station next to the Large Format Printer in the Print Hub on Level 2 of Frenchay Library.
    • This is not a regular use PC, it is only for releasing jobs from the Large Format Printer.
  2. At the PC, sign in by tapping the user’s ID card or with the user’s username and password.
  3. Select the file to print (the most recent is at the top).
  4. Then select Print.
  5. The document should print out and will drop into the basket – be aware this may take a few minutes.
  6. The printer will trim the document to the desired size. (A0, A1 or A2).

Plotter printing for CATE

Students from the College of Arts, Technology and Environment (CATE) have access to large format printing on Print Queue LargeFormatFET.

There are two A0 plotters in the Q Block Project Room area on Frenchay Campus - room 2Q030.

The PrintWorks Shop is a printing and binding service based in the Frenchay Campus.

Digital Print Bureau (City Campus)

The Digital Print Bureau is based in Bower Ashton Studios, City Campus. They offer laser, wide format, vinyl, acetate, banner and digital fabric printing, plus a guillotine service.

Collection can also be arranged to the Loans Desk in S Block, Frenchay Campus.

Pharos account refunds

Funds gifted by the University are non-refundable.

Personal credit must be £10 minimum for a refund and will only be given on request for students that have completed their studies or have withdrawn from the University.
