About the event
Blockchain is a technology for storing and verifying transactional records that works by appending “blocks” of data to a ledger, which is distributed across a network of peer-to-peer computers. Data recorded in the blockchain is transparent (can be seen by anyone) and immutable (unchangeable once written). Furthermore, you can implement smart contracts on blockchains.
The emergence and popularity of blockchain techniques have significantly changed the operation and management of digital systems globally. Blockchain is one of the most disruptive technologies that will transform the business models and market structures of many industries, including accounting and finance. New applications of blockchain technology exhibit a variety of complex problems which has generated new demands and challenges for practitioners and academics. Like accounting techniques, blockchain technologies could provide opportunity to trace and track down transactions including illegal and criminal activities associated with money laundering and organised crime.
Considering the under-explored impact of blockchain in accounting and finance, and the changes blockchain technology could have on these, it is timely to reflect on the current opportunities, challenges and the future of blockchain technologies in accounting and finance, allied disciplines and the variety of its applications in business and society.
This workshop provides the first step in a series of activities to open opportunities for dialogue on blockchain applications amongst stakeholders.
