International Placement Costs Loan

If your course requires you to attend healthcare placements, you may be eligible to apply for a placement costs loan.

About the loan

If you are an international student and your course requires you to attend placements for which you can claim reimbursement of the travel and/or dual accommodation costs. Then you may be eligible to apply for a placement costs loan to assist with the upfront costs.

A loan for placement costs is interest free and is usually repayable in 120 days.

How much you can borrow

You can borrow up to the amount you will receive in reimbursement.

The reimbursement rates for 2025/26 are:

Expense Rate
Commercial accommodation Up to £82.50 per night
Non-commercial accommodation Up to £37.50 per night
Public transport Actual cost
Travel using your own vehicle:
     Bicycle 30p per mile
Car (any fuel) 42p per mile
Parking, tolls and ferries Actual cost

You will need to pay the first £500 of placement expenses during each year of study.

Ensure that you submit your claim for reimbursement regularly during your placement if possible, so that you can repay the loan when funds are received.
