Future Bristol

Exploring public views on low carbon futures through art and digital media.

Funder: UWE Bristol SPUR scheme

Dates: 2013-2014

Project summary

This project seeks to understand how the public perceives, comprehends and engages with the notion of Bristol as a low carbon city in 2050, by exploring responses to scenarios developed by an expert Delphi group in previous EPSRC-funded PhD research, through creative online tools.

The project website was developed to assist Bristol's successful bid to be European Green Capital in 2015, and the results of this research are intended to contribute to Bristol's delivery of this.

The objectives are to:

  1. Consult the public on two scenarios for Bristol in 2050, to determine acceptability of different low carbon options, and gather and assess opinions and ideas on meeting carbon reduction targets.
  2. Improve understanding of engagement on 'low carbon futures' by different groups and identify opinion patterns to improve future climate information formulation and communication channels.
  3. Develop proposals for multi-activity, multi-stakeholder public research and engagement programmes for Bristol Green Capital 2015, and submit a funding application to the ESRC Knowledge Exchange Opportunities Scheme.
