Trusted Research at UWE Bristol

UWE Bristol is committed to the principles of Trusted Research and Innovation (Trusted Research), supporting research and innovation that is open, collaborative and responsible, while taking proportionate steps to manage potential risks.

Trusted Research is a national approach that helps universities protect researchers, students, collaborators and the institution, particularly where research activity involves:

  • international collaboration
  • access to sensitive data, materials or technologies
  • emerging or dual‑use areas of research
  • new or unfamiliar partners.

UWE Bristol follows a risk‑based and proportionate approach, aligned with UK government guidance. Trusted Research is not about restricting academic collaboration, but about ensuring that research is carried out safely, ethically and with appropriate awareness of risk.

The University encourages researchers to consider Trusted Research at an early stage of project development so that advice and support can be accessed where appropriate. Most Trusted Research considerations are addressed through existing governance and support processes.

Further practical guidance and support for UWE Bristol staff are available via the staff intranet (UWE Bristol staff login required).
