Project summary

AQMRC in partnership with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) and the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) developed and delivered the first National Framework on Air Quality for the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism in South Africa.

This prestigious project further enhances the international reputation of AQMRC in disseminating research and delivering knowledge exchange in air quality science and management. Including the development of delivery of a National Framework document, the project involved intensive scoping workshops in the UK with the project partners, public engagement and participation workshops in South Africa, and wider information dissemination to successfully develop a challenging, progressive but also practical National Air Quality Framework for South Africa.

This project provided AQMRC with an ideal opportunity to utilise our experiences in working with national and international air quality communities. Subsequently, AQMRC, through Professor Enda Hayes and Professor Jim Longhurst, have reviewed the State of Environment report on behalf of the South African, ten years after the original National Framework, to provide a reflection on progress to date and international trends in air quality management.

Please email Professor Jim Longhurst at for more details.
