Description

You are warmly invited to join us for the launch of 'Developing and Implementing a Public Health and Criminological Approach to Tackling Sexual Abuse'.

Drawing on 5–10 years of research, practice and policy debate involving social science staff at UWE Bristol, the book argues for reframing sexual abuse as a public health issue as well as a criminal justice concern. By recognising sexual abuse as an issue affecting health, mental health and wellbeing, we can focus not only on responding to abuse but also on preventing it, protecting the public, managing risk and reducing victimisation.

The event will be chaired by Dr Anne Eason, Associate Professor and Director of Policing at UWE Bristol, with contributions from:

  • Professor Kieran McCartan, Professor of Criminology and Health, UWE, & Chair of the National Organisation for the Treatment of Abuse (NOTA)
  • Dr Justin Varney-Bennett, Regional Director of Public Health (Southwest), Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, Department of Health and Social Care
  • Carl Hall, Director of Community Development, Interventions Alliance.

The presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion, question and answer session and drinks reception, offering an opportunity to explore the themes of the book and discuss their implications for research, policy and practice.

The book launch is being hosted by the South West Public Health and Criminal Justice Network.
