Policing sexual violence in the night-time economy?
Dr Chris Magill and Professor Peter Squires - University of Brighton
Project Vigilant is a police-led, perpetrator focused initiative designed to tackle sexual offending in the night-time economy. Originally established by Thames Valley Police in 2019, Project Vigilant adopts a new approach to policing the night-time economy. Central to this approach, is the deployment of a combination of uniformed and plain clothed officers who patrol areas outside nightclubs, bars and clubs between set times and on specific nights to identify people who may be displaying signs of predatory behaviour. Other forces, including the Metropolitan Police, have since implemented similar approaches to policing their night time economies. In this session, we describe the original project, and report on the evaluation results of this important police initiative.
