About the event

We are delighted to announce this workshop with guest speaker, Dr Vivek Bhatt (University of Aberdeen) who will introduce postcolonialism and “Third World Approaches to International Law” (TWAIL), both of which are concerned with international law’s roles in empire, colonialism, and the marginalisation of non-Western perspectives.

The seminar will begin with a review of key academic literature in the area before considering the question of how international law scholars can incorporate postcolonialism and TWAIL into their research.

We will think about how postcolonialism and TWAIL can inform the questions we ask about international law and our research methods, and we will discuss the limitations and critiques of these approaches.

The workshop is intended to be interactive; those in attendance are warmly encouraged to discuss their own research projects and how postcolonialism and TWAIL may be relevant to their work.
