About the event
UWE Bristol’s Education and Childhood Research Group’s Equity in Education research strand are co-hosting a launch for the third book from the Paired Peers project, which was published earlier this summer. The other co-hosts are the University of Bristol’s School of Education, and the book’s publisher, Bristol University Press.
The Paired Peers project followed a cohort of undergraduates at the two universities in Bristol for seven years from their enrolment at either UWE Bristol or University of Bristol in 2010, through graduation in 2013 and for another four years until 2017. Each participant was interview up to 10 times across this period, and numerous other forms of data were also gathered from them. The participants were contacted again in autumn 2021 so we could find out how their work and wider lives were impacted by the experience of the COVID-19 lockdowns.
The new book, which is co-authored by a team of eight academics led by Professor Nicola Ingram, is a fascinating exploration of young adult lives during transitions into, through and out of university and into the graduate career ‘market’ and wider society. They were aged 18 or 19 when starting university in 2010 and are now all in their early/mid-30s.
The new book is called The degree generation: The making of unequal graduate lives, and concerns the workings of class, race and gender in young graduates’ lives. It provides insights into ways in which the dominant policy goals of social mobility and graduate employability and experienced by young people themselves. Find out more information on the book.
The format of the launch will include a presentation from several of the authors and plenty of time for questions from the audience which should generate an interesting discussion.
