Description

We are hosting a one‑day, conference‑style celebration for International Women's Day, bringing together powerful voices, research, creativity and lived experience across the University.

This year’s theme is Women’s Health; spanning physical, mental, social, historical and workplace health. Throughout the day you’ll find talks, workshops, creative sessions, historical insights, research spotlights and panels happening in parallel across multiple rooms.

The programme is curated by the Women’s History Month Steering Group, made up of colleagues from across UWE Bristol including our staff networks, to ensure the day reflects a broad range of perspectives, disciplines and lived experiences.

Reasons to attend:

  • Celebrate the work of UWE Bristol women across research, teaching, practice and leadership.
  • Explore the evidence, experiences and ideas shaping better outcomes for women.
  • Join sessions freely: drop in across the day.
  • Many sessions are hybrid or recorded.
  • No booking required, just turn up to any session.

They will share how resilience and courage has helped them to find their way through darker days and personal challenges.
12:20-12:50 2X116 and online Neeti Shikha will lead a poetry reading Life as it is: The art of belonging. This poetry session draws from her published collection Life As It Is and reflects on the quiet, complex process of becoming; becoming who you are, becoming what you want, while learning to take life as it is. Rooted partly in Indian cultural and emotional landscapes, the poems move through themes of motherhood, arranged happiness, expectation, love, longing, and self-realisation. The session explores the ongoing negotiation between acceptance and aspiration; between the roles we inherit and the selves we shape.
Join the session online.
13:00-14:00 3X109 A session on Understanding gender bias and the gender pay gap: Why it matters. Led by Tracy Curnock, Stephanie Todd, Hilary Lowe and Elizabeth Green this session will consider gender bias in job adverts and the gender pay gap. Join us for table discussions where we’ll explore gender bias in job adverts and how feminine and masculine coded language can influence salaries, alongside a closer look at the gender pay gap here at UWE Bristol. Together, we’ll examine data and consider practical ways we can help close pay gaps and create more inclusive, fairer career progression for everyone.
14:10-15:00 3X109 and online Toni Dicaccavo will lead Menopause on the couch: Empowering women through talking therapy. Dr Toni Dicaccavo is an academic and practitioner psychologist with over 20 years' experience of working with individuals and families in therapy. The presentation focuses on the increasing number of women presenting with menopause issues and how psychotherapy can support them to embrace the menopause as an expansive rather than diminishing life transition.
