UWE Bristol appoints new Dean for Students

Dr. Emmanuel Adukwu Higher Education Bioscience teacher of the year 2023

Professor Emmanuel Adukwu has been appointed UWE Bristol’s new Dean for Students, focusing on student experience and outcomes for Global Majority students.

Emmanuel will take up the position from his current role as Deputy Head at the School of Applied Sciences and Professor of Applied Microbiology.

In his role as Dean for Students, Emmanuel will lead on cross-institutional policy and cultural transformations that ensure all students can thrive, particularly those that are underrepresented. He’ll champion a personalised student experience which enables students to achieve their full potential, while challenging structural and cultural barriers to equity, supporting UWE Bristol’s Anti-Racism Strategy.

At UWE Bristol, he has held a number of senior positions including Director of Studies for Research and widening participation and employability lead. Beyond the university, he has served on national and international committees promoting accessible and inclusive education and research, and maximising opportunities for students globally.

Emmanuel recently led the creation of the Minoritised Life Scientists Future Forum (MLSFF) to enable pipeline development of marginalised groups in STEM across the UK and Europe. He was previously named the Royal Society of Biology Bioscience Teacher of the Year in recognition of his innovative and inclusive teaching practices, dedication to personal development and commitment to supporting colleagues within and beyond UWE Bristol.

About his appointment, Emmanuel said: “I am really excited to be appointed Dean for Students at UWE Bristol, and I am keen to work with colleagues across all Colleges and professional services, and with our students, to support a vibrant campus experience and to ensure all our students are able to achieve and thrive academically and personally.”
