Graduate-led mural project creates opportunities for next generation of creatives
An innovative partnership to create three murals in newly built student accommodation has generated paid opportunities for current UWE Bristol art students and recent graduates.
Art Sync, a public art producer founded by two of the university’s business graduates, was commissioned to deliver the murals within UWE Bristol’s new Kingfisher Court accommodation, ahead of its opening in September.
Developed as part of the university’s wider vibrancy programme, Kingfisher Court now features the new artwork across its entrance lobby and study lounge spaces, including a Kingfisher mural as the centrepiece. Developed in response to student surveys, the murals explore themes of nature and wellbeing to help create a welcoming environment within the accommodation building.
Alongside commissioning three graduate artists, the project has been designed to bring current students directly into the installation process by working with the university’s creative agency New Wave. Six art and illustration students have been paid to work alongside the graduate artists throughout the installation, giving them the opportunity to ask questions, contribute to the artwork, and gain further insight into how professional commissions are delivered.
Mia Luff, student artist at UWE Bristol, said: “I'm so grateful for the opportunities offered through New Wave and Art Sync, as they not only gave me real life experience for the field I want to enter but also solidify the belief that I can do it. I've found it amazing to be able to learn and grow alongside friends and industry professionals whilst applying my skills on a larger scale. Being able to ask questions and do something I've always wanted to do has been so valuable for my future and my confidence. It also looks great for my portfolio as an emerging illustrator too.”
For the graduate artists involved, the project provided paid opportunities to continue developing their careers. Art Sync curated a team whose styles aligned with the project's nature-focused themes, while also bringing the experience needed to deliver the commission successfully.
Mind49 was selected to create the project's signature Kingfisher mural. Known for his exceptional realism, his ability to capture wildlife with remarkable accuracy made him the ideal artist to bring the centrepiece artwork to life.
Marta Zubieta was chosen for her vibrant interpretation of nature and wildlife. Her bold use of colour and expressive landscapes aligned with students' desire for artwork that feels inspiring, uplifting, and visually engaging.
Matilda was selected for her softer, more flowing artistic style. Her work focuses on creating calm and inviting environments, making her a natural fit for the study lounge where students can relax, focus, and unwind.
Anneliese Paul, New Wave Agency Lead and Lecturer in Experiential Learning at UWE Bristol, said: “Uniting Business and Art School graduates to inspire current students while creating a mural for future generations marks a true full-circle moment for New Wave, and a powerful reflection of how far the agency has come. We’re proud to have created a platform where emerging talent can collaborate, learn, and leave a lasting impact, and we’re excited to continue supporting the growth and creative journeys of the exceptional students and graduates involved.”
Azul Amos, Co-Founder at Art Sync, said: “I've always been interested in the positive impact public art can have beyond the artwork itself. Kingfisher Court isn't just about three murals, it's about creating opportunities for students, commissioning graduate artists, and helping people gain experience that can support their future careers. Seeing all of that come together through a single project is something I'm really proud to be involved with.”
