Jim Smith, Professor of Interactive Artificial Intelligence, leads UWE Bristol's contribution to TREvolution, a national programme funded through DARE UK that is reshaping how sensitive research data can be used safely and efficiently.
Within TREvolution, UWE Bristol leads the SACRO strand (Semi-Automated Checking of Research Outputs), developing tools and processes that support researchers to share outputs responsibly from Trusted Research Environments (TREs). This work focuses on reducing the manual burden of data checks while strengthening safeguards around privacy, disclosure risk and governance – a critical challenge as AI-driven research scales across health, social care and public policy.
Crucially, this is not abstract theory. Early adopters shaping the development of the of TREvolution tools include organisations at the forefront of data-intensive research and regulation, such as Public Health Scotland, several of the NHS regional ‘Secure Data Environments’, UK Data Service and the Office for National Statistics. UWE Bristol's research is helping these organisations move faster while maintaining public confidence, proving that ethical data use and innovation are not competing priorities, but complementary ones.
Cyber security research grounded in real-world threat
Alongside data privacy, UWE Bristol has built deep expertise in cyber security – spanning research, education and applied practice. Cyber threats are no longer niche technical issues; they affect national infrastructure, businesses of every size and individuals’ everyday lives.
