Filmmaking students from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) fought off tough competition from 18 institutions to win four awards at the Kodak NAHEMI Student Commercials Awards, held at the Regent Street Cinema, London.

The NAHEMI/Kodak Commercial Awards is a competition for student filmmakers to make a 30 second commercial using one roll of 400ft negative film stock supplied by Eastman Kodak. Each year, briefs are provided by professional advertising agencies and entries are judged by a jury that includes representatives of the agencies and commercials professionals. The competition is open to students who are studying on a NAHEMI member course in the UK or Ireland, and prizes are awarded for craft categories as well as ‘Best in Brief’ and ‘Best Overall’.

The four commercial briefs provided this year were for Xbox, Ginsters, Alliance Witan and Brooks Sexual Health. UWE Bristol Filmmaking students entered a total of six commercials in response to the set briefs. Three of these films won four awards:

  • Best Cinematography - Joel Anning for Ginsters withJust Like Mum Used to Make’.
  • Best Sound Design - Jude Drew for Xbox withA Controller for Every Player’.
  • 3rd in Brief for Ginsters - Georgia Brown, Brianna Williams, Joel Anning, Lorna Martin & Team with ‘Just Like Mum Used to Make’.
  • 2nd in Brief for Alliance Witan - Zac Wilding, Maya Oyibo-Goss, Teya Dardha & Team with ‘Finding a Home’.

John Podpadec, Senior Lecturer in Filmmaking, said: “The Nahemi-Kodak Commercials Competition is not only a chance for our students to professionally respond to commercially set briefs but also to work on 16mm film. The continued relevance of film within teaching cannot be underestimated as using the medium demands rigour and attention to detail. The reward is moving image of unparalleled beauty. We at UWE Bristol Filmmaking greatly appreciate the support that Kodak continues to give to us in higher education and the hard work of Peter Hort and NAHEMI in organising the competition.”
