UWE Bristol ranked among top 12 per cent of universities globally for sustainability
UWE Bristol has climbed over 400 places in the QS World University Sustainability Rankings 2026 and is now within the top 12 per cent of universities globally.
In the latest release of the rankings that measure a university’s sustainability credentials, UWE Bristol is ranked 232 of 2002 universities.
QS World University Sustainability Rankings evaluate universities across a range of environmental and social impacts including environmental research across the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), health and wellbeing, equality and governance.
As well as its overall ranking, UWE Bristol is within the top five per cent of universities globally for governance, one of the three categories used to measure the university’s sustainability score, ranking at 110.
Paul Roberts, Head of Environment and Sustainability at UWE Bristol, said: “It’s really encouraging to see such a significant jump in the QS Sustainability rankings, particularly given the ongoing efforts to embed sustainability across the organisation and in our teaching, research, community outreach and operations at UWE Bristol.
“The rankings also help to inform prospective students that as a university we are demonstrating our commitment to a more sustainable future. Our new position in the top 12 per cent globally reflects the collective determination of our students and staff towards this.”
Georgina Gough, Professor in Education for Sustainable Development, said: “These rankings take a holistic, whole institution approach to sustainability, which aligns with our approach to sustainability at UWE Bristol. Half of our score for the QS Sustainability Rankings comes from environmental teaching and research, combined with knowledge exchange and impact performance and reputation. Our strong positioning here is testament to the high quality work of colleagues across UWE Bristol.”
Kirsti Norris, Head of Carbon and Energy said: “UWE Bristol is setting new standards in sustainability - decarbonising our estate, harnessing solar energy, and delivering the world’s largest Passivhaus-certified student accommodation. I am delighted that our actions are earning global recognition and shaping a sustainable future.”
UWE Bristol’s Climate and Sustainability Plan 2024-26 is mapped according to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to guide the university’s strategic direction and covers cross-cutting topics such as education for sustainable development, climate mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity, circular economy, travel, sustainable food, and procurement.
