A statement on the death of Professor Jason Arday

Media Relations Team, 17 August 2026

We are deeply saddened by the death of Professor Jason Arday. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, students and all those whose lives he touched.

Jason was known personally to members of our UWE Bristol community. He visited the University, generously supported our Equity programme and shared his experience and insight with our colleagues and students. Many people here will therefore feel his loss personally, as well as recognising the significance of his contribution to higher education more widely.

Jason’s work helped to deepen understanding of race, education and inequality. In the period before his death, he was subjected to intense disproportionate public scrutiny and personal criticism. His family has described the sustained abuse and misinformation directed towards him.

Alongside being a prominent Black academic, Jason spoke often about his autism. His death will be felt especially deeply by Black colleagues and those who are neurodivergent. Many are grieving. Some are angry, fearful or feeling newly vulnerable. At UWE Bristol, we want our colleagues and students to know that we see that pain and stand alongside you and there is support available.

Universities must be places in which people can contribute, question, challenge and lead without being dehumanised or subjected to racialised abuse. Academic standards and legitimate scrutiny matter, but they can never justify harassment, cruelty or the stripping away of a person’s dignity.

We will remember Jason with gratitude for his contribution to our community. We remain committed to confronting racism, supporting colleagues who experience it and working with others across higher education to ensure that no one facing public hostility is left isolated.

We ask everyone to approach this moment with humanity, reflection and respect for Jason’s family and loved ones.
