Things to be aware of before submitting
Key information you need to know before submitting an assignment.
Submission completion time
- Your assignment submission must be completed before 14:00 (UK time) to be on time.
- The submission deadline is based on the Blackboard server time and is recorded when your submission is complete, not when you click submit. Our Blackboard servers are on UK time.
File naming convention
Do not use long file names over 120 characters long.
Only use these characters in file names. Using other characters may corrupt your file on upload:
- a-z
- 0-9
- underscore _
- hyphen -
Coursework format
- You must provide the coursework in the format specified by your tutor, including the appropriate file extension. The required file format will usually be Microsoft Word with a file extension of .docx or .doc, but ask your tutor if you are not sure.
- Your marks will suffer if your tutor cannot open or properly view your submission.
Software
Mac users
- If you are using the iWorks application to create your document, so the markers can open the file , you must export as *.docx using the File > Export function in iWorks.
- Apple Mac files such as .pages will not be accepted for marking, unless specified by the module leader.
Non-standard software
- Your tutor may not be able to open or properly view your submission. Discounted software is available to UWE Bristol students.
Uploading files
- To avoid upload issues, close the files before browsing to them and attaching to your submission.
- You may submit to the assignment as many times as you wish (perhaps making an early attempt to familiarise yourself), but only the last submission you make is assessed.
- If your last submission is after the deadline but within submission period, this submission will be the one marked and not any earlier submissions.
Check upload was successful
- It is your responsibility to make sure your coursework has been uploaded correctly. If it cannot be read and marked, it will be given a mark of zero.
- See guidance on checking your submission was successful.
File size limit
- There is a 100MB limit on each file you attach to your assignment submission. Large files may take a while to upload so allow plenty of time before the deadline and wait for your submission to finish.
- It may appear like nothing is happening but please wait for it to complete.
- Call the IT Service Desk on +44 (0)117 32 83612 as soon as possible if you are having trouble submitting.
Leave enough time
Do not leave submission to the last minute. Always allow time in case of technical issues. The date and time of your submission is taken from the Blackboard server and is recorded when your submission is complete, not when you click submit.
Attaching files
- You can attach more than one file but they must be in one submission.
- If you submit your files in separate submissions, only the latest submission will be marked.
- By submitting an assignment you are giving your personal certification that the content is your own work.
Anonymising your files
Where appropriate, your coursework should be marked without the marker being aware who has submitted it. Ensure that any file you submit does not include anything which compromises this: do not put your name in the file itself.
