Tech start-up businesses that are addressing some of society’s biggest challenges are thriving at UWE Bristol’s innovation centre, Future Space.

Established in 2016, Future Space was created to help businesses grow, by bringing together cutting-edge workspace for start-up businesses, university research and skilled experts under one roof.

A decade on, it’s impact in the West of England includes contributing £56 million to the local economy.

Future Space has played a huge role in the journey of SAH Diagnostics. Although we’ve invested in our own purpose-built Community Diagnostic Hub, we’ve deliberately kept our headquarters at Future Space because of the people and the environment. Creating new jobs, boosting the economy

Since 2016, Future Space has supported 178 businesses focused on developing technologies that will help improve people’s lives and created nearly 1,000 jobs.

These businesses, including start-ups and scale-ups across robotics, AI, medtech, biotech and digital innovation, have launched 588 new products, services and patents into the world. This includes Milbotix, a start-up transforming dementia care through advanced wearable technology, and Supersmith, whose three-wheeled foldable mobility scooter uses stabilisation technology to reduce the risk of tipping, making it safer for users.

Unique partnerships that help businesses grow

Future Space resident SAH Diagnostics delivers specialist cancer diagnostic services to 34 NHS trusts and hospitals across the UK. The company developed the world’s first mobile urology unit, which supports cancer diagnosis and treatment, while working alongside university experts and likeminded business founders at Future Space, and accessing the university’s facilities.

SAH Diagnostics has recently opened a new cancer diagnostic centre in Bradley Stoke. The company has supported the treatment of more than 400,000 patients to date.
