Bec is a PhD candidate within the 3D3 programme funded by the National Productivity Investment Fund. This project is undertaken in collaboration with external partner Motivation. It will focus on the development and testing of data-driven approaches to the design and digital-assisted fabrication of bespoke wheelchair seating and postural support devices (PSDs), which reduce the risk of secondary health complications such as pressure sores.

Bec will use a qualitative design ethnography approach together with empirically-based iterative design approaches. Initial research will also encompass redistributed manufacturing, user research when the designer and user are remote, and participatory action research, putting digital fabrication tools into the hands of end users.

Bec has an MA in Design from UWE, a BSc in Design and Innovation, and a BA in Visual Arts. She previously worked as a technician and instructor at UWE, and prior to this in advocacy, disability support and social work, which drives her interest in inclusive design and collaborative work.
