The Systems Engineering Degree Apprenticeship
Students will develop advanced technical knowledge of electronics, embedded systems, software and hardware, and further develop their ability as an embedded system designer.
The Systems Engineering apprenticeship has been developed in collaboration with leading industry employers to provide you with relevant in-depth learning and valuable skills for the leadership of technical projects.
Electronic systems are at the core of the Industry 4.0 revolution and play a pervasive role in the operation of advanced manufacturing, the creation of novel consumer products and new medical technologies.
An individual project accounting for a third of the programme and optional modules will ensure that students apply their knowledge of advanced engineering principles to their professional work.
The ideal apprentice will be an ambitious, self-motivated graduate with an upper second class or higher award in an electronic engineering or other appropriate science degree, currently working in the electronics systems sector. They will be keen to progress and attain senior project manager roles.
A graduate of this degree apprenticeship will be capable of managing substantive projects and confidently leading their teams.
Part-time delivery, attending eight block weeks of study through the duration of the course.
Material will be delivered through a mixture of class contact, online webinars and tutorials, and remote support. The block weeks will be structured to ensure that students have time for class contact, project work and academic support sessions to create a balanced academic experience.
The optional modules listed are those that are most likely to be available, but they may be subject to change.
- Project module (work-based learning project, which will form part of the assessment for the end-point assessment).
- Embedded real time control systems.
- Safety critical embedded systems.
- System design using HDLs.
- Professional development appraisal and continuing review.
Plus optional modules from:
- High speed analogue circuit design.
- Wireless sensor networks.
- Aircraft systems integration.
- Aircraft systems verification.
- Platform and major systems.
This is a practical programme with an emphasis on implementing core engineering principles in the design of electronic circuits and components.
You will mostly be assessed through demonstrations, presentations and project work. There is an exam in the first year
Postgraduate Diploma or MSc in Digital Electronic Systems Engineering.
Students can work towards professional accreditation, via the Professional Development Appraisal and Continuing Review module (- see ‘Business benefits’ section below).
Entry requirements will be a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Applicants who fall outside this requirement will be considered on an individual basis, taking into account relevant professional experience.

This is a practical engineering programme and students will demonstrate their understanding of core engineering principles through the design of electronic components and circuits. You will learn in modern facilities, with access to well-equipped electronics, control systems and embedded systems laboratories during block week sessions.
We will also provide portable circuit design units that you can use at home or in your place of work. Simulation software is available to students so that you can test and verify proof of concept in your design work.
