Undergraduate internship scheme 2023–2024

All available funding for the current academic year 2023/24 has now been allocated and the internship schemes are now closed.

We hope to source new funding and reopen the schemes in October 2024. The information provided below is for information only, for interns that have already secured an internship.

Our undergraduate internship scheme offers an exciting opportunity to participate in a paid internship and gain valuable work experience. With opportunities available in a range of sectors, you can find something to suit you.

Our part-time internship scheme offers approximately 12 hours work a week, totalling 148 hours – this scheme is now closed for 2023/24.

Internships are a great way to expand your skill set and improve your network, and can help you to consider the type of work that is right for you in the future.

Our 148-hour part-time internships allow you to work up to 12 hours per week for approximately 12 weeks alongside your studies and other commitments.

These internships suit project work that can be delivered flexibly and remotely so you can work at weekends and whenever suits you and the business. We encourage you to discuss your timetable and commitments with your employer and create a working agreement between you.

You will have weekly meetings and check-ins with your employer and they will act as your mentor.

Due to the fantastic success and high interest of the part-time internship scheme, we will not be running a Summer internship scheme in 2024.

During your internship you are employed by the company not UWE Bristol. Your employer will recruit you on the same basis as they would any other member of staff and you will be paid directly by them through PAYE on a weekly or monthly basis.

We will provide the employer with access to an agreement that needs to be electronically signed by you, your employer and UWE Bristol. We recommend that your internship employer provides you with a separate agreement to cover any company policies not included in the UWE Bristol internship agreement.

You will be required to complete a short pre-internship questionnaire and a feedback form at the end of the internship. 

You will accrue 16.25 hours of paid leave during your 148-hour internship. Your holiday entitlement, working hours and sickness absence must be arranged according to your employer's policies and procedures.

Tax and National Insurance contributions

The figure paid to you may be subject to tax and National Insurance contributions. Sometimes you will be placed on an emergency tax code and what is deducted from your net pay is more than you should be paying. This will depend on whether you have another job and how much tax you have already paid in the current tax year. The UWE Bristol Employability Bursary aims to support lower-income UK undergraduate students to access a range of activities. Activities aim to add value to your student experience and help you to achieve a better graduate outcome. An internship is an eligible activity.

Bursaries are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and you must meet eligibility criteria.
