Fabrication: Clay & Enamel

The Clay & Enamel area provides school-wide support to students and staff and offers technical help via traditional and modern techniques for the following processes:

Clay
Slabwork, press/hump-moulding, mould making, slipcasting, hand modelling, paperclay, on-glaze and transfer/decals, as well as individually negotiated experimental work.

Enamel
Mainly copper enamelling but there is a potential to use steel. Techniques include wet and dry processes, sifting, graffito, cloisonné, on-glaze painting, resist techniques, transfers and the possibility of etching.

Glass
Still in development: the main focus will be simple fusing, slumping and basic stained-glass. Enamelling and transfer will also be an option. Technical instruction is available at various levels in all the above processes. Formal workshops are booked and arranged in conjunction with academic staff.

Studio Access

Access to the studios is through workshops and open access. While workshops are running, open access is restricted, though help might be available if there is room. Booked workshops for each semester will be displayed on the notice board by the entrance.

General Information

It is necessary that you are introduced to the Clay and Enamel area through formal instruction. This will cover all mandatory Health and Safety structures and give you a good idea of how to manage your work-time, with regard to making, drying, firing and glazing.

Most materials are stocked and supplied by Clay and Enamel. There are material costs, which can be paid through the student payment card system (PCS).

(For further information on the PCS system, see Page 40)
