Paul Sandameer

Paul Sandameer is a potter and ceramics technician at the Faculty of Art, Media and Design.

"I endeavour to evoke qualities of playfulness in my work...Qualities such as joy, ambiguity, beauty and fun are factors I strive to achieve in an attempt to recreate the child's delight in their world. The effects that I achieve in my work though appearing complex are in fact very simple. A piece of material is dipped into a liquid form of clay called slip; any clay body will be successful. The clay penetrates the fabric and produces an exact copy once the original material is burnt off in the firing. From that point on the artefact is treated as any other clay object, though probably with a little more care as the artefact can be very brittle until the final temperature or glaze firing is completed."

The pots illustrated below are made from slip-dipped cloth, fired to earthenware temperatures.
