Basil Kardasis Lecture

On 8th April 2003, Basil Kardasis gave a lecture at the Faculty of Art, Media & Design as part of the etc research programme. Basil is a Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Art and from 1997-2000 he was Design Director of the Saga International Design Center in Denmark. At Saga Furs he set up a project to use fur clippings and waste fibres to produce a fur fabric that did not need the animal to be killed for its pelt. Below are a selection of photos of the lecture and of his fabrics.

Basil's fascinating talk emphasised the importance of learning and retaining skills as a maker and of developing those skills to develop new fabrics and new ways of working. The talk was attended by more than 100 staff, students and makers and at the end there was an opportunity to ask questions and to handle the furs and fur fabrics. The lecture was organised by etc member Janet Haigh and was the first in a planned series.
