PhD IN HUMAN COLOUR VISION - FROM COLOUR APPEARANCE TO COLOUR MANAGEMENT:
Applications are invited for a fully funded 3-year PhD studentship starting October 2011 in the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Liverpool.
Project: Our perception of colours remains remarkably stable throughout the life span despite significant changes in the retinal stimulus. Similarly, while colour-normal people may differ in their retinal make-up, they perceive colours in a very similar way. Various hypotheses how the human visual system achieves this perceptual invariance have been proposed. This PhD will study the mechanisms underlying these invariant colour appearance mechanisms. The applied aspect of this PhD consists in using this basic knowledge to develop better colour appearance models with the aim to improve current colour management systems.

Within this project there are opportunities to build collaborations with neuroscience and ophthalmology, and make use of the EEG and fMRI facilities available at the University. Applicants should have a BSc or MSc in psychology, neuroscience, engineering, computer science or related fields. Programming experience in Matlab would be beneficial but desire to learn is essential. Informal enquiries should be addressed, with a short CV, to Sophie Wuerger (s.m.wuerger@liverpool.ac.uk).
Applicants are required to have a first class/2.1 honours undergraduate degree or equivalent. Please contact Lindsay Edmonds by email l.edmonds@liverpool.ac.uk for an application form. Application deadline is 1st September 2011.
