Vikki Hill

Professional Practice

Vikki is interested in the aesthetics of low-fi film based photography utilising a range of photographic equipment including medium format plastic cameras to take advantage of aspects such as lens distortion and the introduction of light leaks on the image. Vikki’s work also focuses on using alternative film developing and printing techniques to further alter the photographic aesthetic of the finished image. This includes developing the film using expired chemistry or household items such as coffee and washing soda and printing the resulting negatives onto enamelled copper or steel plates.

Recent work has centred on the image aesthetic of the Pictorialist photographers and how this was enhanced by the manipulative printing processes they utilised such as the gum bichromate technique and whether it is possible to recreate this aesthetic utilising low-fi equipment. Another interest is the use of self portraiture to explore issues surrounding gender perception and identity. Vikki has recently produced a series of photographs and an artist’s book entitled “It’s a Man’s World” investigating these issues.
