The Mark of the Digital Maker

PROJECT MANAGER: Tavs Jorgensen
PROJECT DURATION: 2006 - 2013

This research explored the use of post WIMP interface systems for new craft and design approaches. The research established several novel integrated processes for designing and manufacturing artefacts by transforming freely drawn 3D sketches into physical form through the use of a digitizing arm. This was achieved by combining a number of digital and analogue design and making processes, which were tested through a series of creative exploration. The outputs form the research include numerous artifacts (in glass, ceramics) exhibitions and papers. The project was also the subject of a Craft Council web feature exhibition including a commissioned film by Federico Urdaneta http://onviewonline.craftscouncil.org.uk/

Rapid Tooling for Glass Investment Casting

PROJECT MANAGER: Tavs Jorgensen
PROJECT CO-INVESTIGATOR: Gayle Matthias
PROJECT PARTNES: ZCorporation and Royal Free Hospital (UCL)
PROJECT DURATION: 2009 - 2015

This research project was a research project that established an innovative method for 3D printing moulds for glass investment casting. The method was developed through collaborative research with Gayle Matthias at Falmouth University. The research established a novel method of post-possessing 3D printed moulds to achieve enhanced refractory capabilities and thus enable a method of directly 3D printing glass investment moulds.
The project attracted significant commercial sponsorship from Zcorporation (US) and was used in explorative tests with ground-breaking research at the Royal Free Hospital (London) for the creation of glass moulds used in a process of growing replacement body parts for reconstructive surgery.
