Dr Carinna Parraman
CFPR Deputy Director
Carinna’s motivation for research in colour, is based on her artist background and in mixing pigmented colour for traditional printmaking. Her research has developed through long term usage of digital imaging software and print hardware; experience of photomechanical methods for image making; an increasing understanding and knowledge of the field of digital inkjet printing for herself and for other artists; and more recently in collaboration with Hewlett Packard Laboratories - an ongoing dialogue to develop new creative approaches for inkjet printing.

How to define and describe colour is a problematic activity, for colour scientists, designers and artists alike. The use of colour in art and science is one the most far ranging, ongoing, problematic yet fascinating subjects as to how to for example, identify, name, categorise, mix or print. Furthermore, as technologies relating to colour continue to develop at a pace, there is a need for a continual reappraisal and adaptation.
The relationship of ink on paper is an important consideration. A range of print tests are being undertaken to demonstrate the impact of the paper on a printed image and how colours might change over time. This might be due to the paper, the inks, or storage conditions. Tests have involved printing onto coated and uncoated papers. Microphotography is used to record the relationship of ink and paper fibre, and how these colours might change. Furthermore, measurements are taken of colour patches and the whiteness of papers to ascertain how, during storage, paper and colours might change.
Carinna has worked on and coordinated a variety of print and digital print projects, including the International Digital Miniature Print Portfolio; Boxing Clever; Place; and '20-20' - A documentation of making prints. She was also involved in Hewlett Packard @rtExchange, which facilitates web based exchange of ideas for schools in Europe. She has presented papers at both science and art conferences including The Colour Imaging Conference USA, Institute of Physics, CADE (Computers and Art Design Education), Southern Graphics Council Conference USA, and IMPACT print conferences. The long term objective is to develop with artists, designers, technologists and scientists a cross disciplinary approach to improving colour and print.
In 2006, through European Union, Framework 6 Marie Curie Conferences & Training Courses (SCF), CREATE, Colour Research for European Advanced Technology Employment, was established. Carinna was successful in gaining half a million Euros to work with European Institutes to host, teach and exchange knowledge in many aspects of colour. The co-institutes are: Università Degli Studi Di Milano, Italy; Gjøvik University College, Norway; University of Leeds; University of Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain; Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne, France; Pannon University (formerly University of Veszprém) Hungary. The courses and conferences begin in September 2007 and run for 4 years.
To find out more about CREATE, you can visit the website at www.create.uwe.ac.uk Her fine art practice is based on an investigation of the perceptual impact of assimilation and contrast, which she describes as colour in flux. As Albers suggests "in visual perception a colour is almost never seen as it really is", where colour is relative to its neighbouring colour, some colours will overpower, some enhance, others will excite and vibrate, and as the eye fatigues or becomes accustomed to viewing the artwork, colour may change.
