Enamel CPD, Workshops & Public Demonstrations

The Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR) offers a series of dynamic CPD (continuing professional development) courses aimed at, amongst others, artists, designers, craftspeople, communicators, teachers and managers. They offer the opportunity for professional updating, for learning new skills and techniques, and for intellectual stimulus.

RE-SEE AND RE-USE - Masterclass with Professor Robert Ebendorf
12th-14th July 2010
An exciting opportunity to work with internationally renowned American jeweller Professor Robert Edendorf, who has many years of experience in transforming the found object. This Master class will encourage playfulness and experimentation with a focus on jewellery and small objects of personal importance, expression, and adornment.
Discover methods of selection, integration and assembly with a limitless range of materials and merge your aesthetic strengths with an exciting new palette.
Using drawing and designing as a starting point you will be able to develop ideas, using your own selection of found materials. There will be card, paper, thread and wire available in the studio. A material and equipment list will sent on enrollment.

Drawing and Mark Making for Vitreous Enamel 
Led by Elizabeth Turrell 
26, 27 and 28 January 2010
This three-day course offers the opportunity to experiment with simple drawing and mark making in enamel as preparation for producing a larger pre-enamelled steel panel. You will be supplied with six small steel panels and a larger pre-enamelled steel panel that will be fired in the large kiln. The workshop will include a presentation on contemporary approaches to the vitreous enamel surface. This course is suitable for those without previous experience of working in enamel although a practical background working within art and design is recommended.

Water Based Screenprinting for the Enamelling Process 
Led by Elizabeth Turrell and Dave Fortune 
2, 3 and 4 February 2010
This three-day course will help you develop your vitreous enamel work with a focus on the creative application of enamel (waterslide) transfers/decals and direct screen-printing on both steel and copper. The skills you will learn can be applied at both large and small-scale. This course is suitable for those without previous experience of working in enamel although a practical background working within art and design is recommended.

Introduction to Designing and Producing Vitreous Enamel Panels for Public Art Commissions 
Led by Elizabeth Turrell 
23, 24 and 25 February 2010
This three-day course is an opportunity for artists considering applying for public art commissions to prepare up to six small steel sample panels and one larger panel for presentations. The course will include examples of contemporary examples of public art commissions in vitreous enamel to inspire you. During the course you will be given plenty of time to produce samples, the application and the procedure of firing your finished samples will also be covered. Participants must have some experience of using enamel.

Laser-cutting Stencils for the Application of Enamel 
Led by Elizabeth Turrell and Tom Sowden 
17, 18 and 19 March 2010
Learn how to create stencils from a range of materials including paper, card and plastic film, by the end of the course you will be able to prepare designs to send to commercial laser-cutting services. Once you have prepared your stencils you will produce a series of enamel samples on copper and steel using sifting and wet process enamels that will be fired. The course aims to suit those who are interested in incorporating the laser as part of their practice and is suitable for those without previous experience of working in enamel and laser cutting although a practical background working within art and design is recommended.
