The Wallpaper Project wins Roland Creative Award

The CFPR are partners in an exciting new European funded research project, 'Colour Printing 7.0', which will address a significant need for research, training, and innovation in the European printing industry. The team will not only take the colour printing field to its next generation of technological advancement, by fully exploring the possibilities of using more than the conventional four colorants cyan, magenta, yellow and black, focusing particularly on spectral properties, but will also train a significant new generation of printing scientists who will be able to assume science and technology leadership in this traditional technological sector.

Cover-ed is a series of curatorial and creative interventions into and around Ed Ruscha and Mason Williams' iconic 1969 photo bookwork Crackers, a copy of which is held in Arnolfini's Archive. Arnolfini invites you to a sophisticated opening, complete with limo, elegantly dressed special guests and mysterious crudités.

An event held on World Book Night, Saturday 5th March 2011, in tribute to Douglas Coupland's novel The Gum Thief, an evening of nothing being cooked, Chinese food having to be ordered in and eaten off of paper plates from Staples. Collaborators were asked to send photos of toast, produce music, write 200 words from the perspective of a piece of toast, to make things on the night etc.

The CFPR at UWE has been awarded funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to further develop a technology which enables ceramic objects to be printed in 3D. The patented technology enables users to design, print, fire and glaze a ceramic item, allowing production of items that until now have not been possible to manufacture.

Congratulations to the contemporary jeweller Sue Gregor whose work is profiled in the April 2011 issue of Vogue. Sue was recently awarded Proof of Concept funding by UWE to explore the use of cutting edge laser equipment and techniques used by CFPR researchers and will be developing a new range of products working with Tom Sowden in our laser bureau during 2011.

Deborah Southerland went to the Bits from Bytes HQ to test out some 3D printing with food as part of her early career researcher grant project on 3D edible printing. Here's a video of the first try with mash potato - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWDWuQPIx0I - watch out for more to come as we work to get 3D food printing perfected! This project is being carried out on a modified RapMan 3.1 3D printer and is a collaboration between Bits from Bytes and Deborah Southerland, along with colleagues, from the Centre for Fine Print Research, UWE Bristol.

The realisation of fast, efficient and cost-effective printing methods and printable materials will enable a wide variety of previously impractical technologies
