Researchers from the 3D Printing research team at the CFPR presented recent research findings at the prestigious IS&T hosted NIP and Digital Fabrication 2011 conference in Minnesota. David Huson presented findings from an ongoing AHRC funded project 'Solid Free-form Fabrication in Fired Ceramic as a Design Aid for Concept Modelling the Ceramic Industry'. Dr Peter Walters gave two papers presenting findings from his recent UWE Early Career Researcher Grant funded project 'Smart materials and novel actuators: Creative applications in art and design'. David and Peter also presented the paper 'Edible Printing', co-authored with UWE Early Career Researcher Grant recipient Debbie Southerland. The paper relates to Debbie's ongoing research into 'Edible 3D Printing'.
NIP is a comprehensive industry-wide conference for researchers and academia presenting the latest
scientific and technical advances in their fields. These include ink jet printing systems and materials,
toner-based electrophotographic systems and materials, thermal printing systems, electronic paper
and paper-like displays, advanced and novel imaging systems, media for digital printing, print quality,
as well as a special focus on design for environmental sustainability.
In this conference industry leaders discuss and present the advances in non-impact printing applications,
addressing new and growing markets: digital packaging, commercial and industrial printing,
high speed ink jet, textile and fabric printing, security and forensic printing, and hardware for printing
inspection and authentication among others.
As in recent years, NIP is being held in conjunction with Digital Fabrication 2011. This brings great
synergy to NIP27 as Digital Fabrication deals with the potential of digital printing technology for new
applications and materials that go well beyond traditional printing and have been used, for example,
to produce MEMS and electronic devices.
