Title: Reflectance, illumination, and appearance

Abstract:
We studied color constancy of two 3-D Color Mondrian displays made of two identical painted wooden shapes. We used on 6-chromatic, and 5-achromatic paints applied to 100+ block facets. The three-dimensional targets adds shadows and multiple reflections not found in flat Mondrians. Observers viewed one set in nearly uniform illumination [Low-Dynamic- Range(LDR)]; the other in directional non-uniform illumination [High-Dynamic-Range(HDR)]. Both 3-D Mondrians, were viewed simultaneously, side-by-side. We used two techniques to measure how well the appearances correlated with the objectsʼ reflectances.
First, observers made magnitude estimates of changes in the appearances of surfaces having identical reflectances. Second, an author painted a reproduction of the pair of Mondrians using watercolors. We
measured the watercolor reflectances to quantify the changes in appearances. Both measurements give us important data on how reflectance, and illumination affect color constancy. While universal constancy generalizations about illumination and reflectance hold for flat Mondrians, they do not for 3-D Mondrians. A constant paint does not exhibit perfect color constancy, but rather shows significant shifts in lightness, hue and chroma in response to nonuniform illumination. The results show that appearance depends on the spatial information in both the illumination and reflectances of objects.

Abstract:
Bodman was invited by Océane Delleaux, Editor of the French language review So Multiples to contribute an essay on the activities she manages for artists’ books at the CFPR, as one of four essays for a special feature on artists’ books (September 2008). The essay was translated into French for So Multiples by Dr Anne Béchard-Léauté (Deputy Head of MPhil in Art Publishing and Artists’ Books at the Université Jean Monnet, Saint-Etienne, France) who contacted Bodman in December 2008, after translating the article to advise her that her students had been translating her publication "Artists' Books Creative Production and Marketing" (the result of an AHRC grant in 2005) into French as part of their studies in English for Art Publishing. Their translated edition will be published on the bookarts website in 2010.
