Flick-Flip-Flick is an innovative project, developed by the Faculty of Creative Arts, Humanities and Education and Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE, in partnership with local schools and colleges and Aardman’s.
Professional animators from Aardman’s have made new flip books working with the Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE . The books demonstrate a range of innovative techniques including: hand drawn, painted, 3D modelling, stop motion, photography and CGI working to a template of 30 frames, the animators then worked with researchers from the Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE to explore new technologies such as laser cutting and UV curing digital presses . Each new work will be printed as both A3 and a book and will form a flagship exhibition for the project at the Bower Ashton Campus 20 Sept 2010 – 9 Oct 2010.
Flick-Flip-Flick continuing professional development courses offer the opportunity for teachers from schools and colleges across the region to develop their art, design and media skills and to develop links with cutting-edge research in creative arts and technologies which can will inform innovation in teaching and learning in Art, Design and Media. There is also the opportunity to participate in an exhibition programme in 2011 exhibiting the work they create alongside the work of leading creative industry professionals as equal partners. The project also enables pupils and staff to take part in the development and delivery of an exhibition and events programme.
The one-day courses will be delivered by print research specialists from the Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE who have extensive experience of delivering art, design and technology focussed CPD to artist and designer teaching professionals, working alongside an accredited Educator-Practitioner Ross Wallis with extensive and current experience of development and innovation in teaching art, design & technology in schools. Ross is an Apple Distinguished Educator and an Adobe Education Leader.
The starting point of the training course is based on flip books and stop frame animation taking inspiration from devices predating and leading up to the cinematic age. The Flick-Flip-Flick course is designed to be suitable for participation from pupils at all levels of education allowing the teacher participating in the project to work directly with their own students (with additional input from Faculty of Creative Arts, Humanities and Education student ambassadors who can work with pupils in school if appropriate) to tailor the project for their school. The training will offer teachers the opportunity to experience and make use of the most up to date digital resources available to schools, and to run a project back in their home institutions which makes full use of their learning with their own students. This project will be fully supported by learning materials and resources from the training day for the project which will enable staff to maximise the use of digital resources in their individual schools and practices.
Each participating school will receive an edition of flip books plus the opportunity to be included in an exhibition in the summer of 2011 which will tour to venues in South Gloucestershire, Bristol, BANES and North Somerset. The exhibition will include the project outcomes from schools, employer-partners and professional artists and designers in addition to UWE students and staff. The exhibition offers students the opportunity to see their work as part of a professional exhibition (and to be included in designing & developing this, if appropriate) alongside the promotional process for the exhibition and digital legacy of the project, which can be built on in future years as a record of work between the partners involved.
