Power Consumption and Switching Off

The Canon MFPs vary their power usage according to activity; they will reduce their power consumption to a very low level if left idle for over a quarter of an hour. (The table below explains this in a little more detail). The machines should be switched off completely if not being used for long periods, e.g. overnight and weekends. Consideration needs to be given to all users of the machine before switching off.

Mode Changes between functions How activated Time between changes Power consumption
Full Power All fusers, rollers and mechanics are powered up Automatic When in use 100%
Quiet Down (or Snooze mode) The control panel is powered down Automatic After 1 minute of inactivity 90%
Sleep Mode The control panel and Engines are powered down Automatic After 15 minutes of inactivity 50%
Low Power mode All functions except the fuser, internal control panel and network card are powered down Automatic After 60 minutes of inactivity 25%
Switch Off All functions, mechanics and heaters and deactivated Manual Overnight and weekends 0

The machines can be forced into stand-by mode early by pressing the switch on the control panel (this shouldn't inconvenience other people):

To switch off completely, use the switch on the side:

Warranties

Canon Warranties

Canon machines do not have Warranties as such; service and support is built into the charge we pay per click (or per side). However, all new Canon machines are given a "temporary warranty” contract. This is because, due to the number of new machines being ordered every month, it can take the contract management teams about 2 months to authorise them and move them on to a permanent contract. Thus, in order to ensure that our customers can order toner or service from day one, Canon arrange a temporary warranty from the out-set.

The transfer from temporary warranty to permanent support is automatic and should have no impact or involve our staff. If the machine is under a temporary warranty continue to request support in the normal manner.

Hewlett Packard Warranties

The University does not purchase Hewlett Packard service warranties for Hewlett Packard devices, however all the devices do have a return to base 1 year warranty, which PSS can assist in supporting when repairs are required.

Some of the more expensive large yield devices had extended warranties bought from the device supplier. ITS and PSS have lists of these and will liaise with suppliers to get devices maintained where relevant.
