How to work in a group

A group functions effectively when attention is given to the:

  • task

  • team (including ground rules)

  • individual.

For an illustration of this, see diagram relating to action-centred leadership.

Less successful groups tend to emphasise the task element to the detriment of the team and individual elements. However, a successful outcome is most likely when all three elements are effectively managed.

For all aspects of the work, you need to attend to:

  • meetings (includes agenda, key roles, meeting records)

  • communication (effective talking and listening)

  • feedback

  • troubleshooting

  • regular reviews of progress.
