Feedback

Feedback can be a powerful tool for consolidating and improving the effectiveness of a group. Sometimes it comes from a tutor, but more often group members give feedback to one another or to the group as a whole. Letting team members know how you believe they are getting on is one of the best ways of making the team work well. This will not always be easy, and needs to be done with sensitivity and care.

The process of giving and receiving feedback enables individuals to:

  • disclose to the group where they stand (their thoughts, feelings, etc)

  • realise how their behaviour affects others in the group

  • learn more about themselves / increase self-awareness

  • take the opportunity to change some aspect/s of their behaviour.

It is important that peer assessment is not seen as something that happens only at the end of an assignment. You should therefore build into your group meetings time to give and receive feedback about performance and how individuals are perceived within the group.

Managed effectively, feedback helps:

  • individuals to develop transferable skills

  • the group to move forward in a constructive manner, and produce work of a high quality.
