Proxy Service

UWE operates a web proxy and caching service for people wishing to access resources on the World Wide Web. We use an automatic configuration script for web browsers to improve the speed and reliability of the service, as well as allowing us to make changes to the underlying infrastructure without affecting the service.

What is a proxy server?

The proxy server is a machine that sits between you and the World Wide Web, and makes all of your requests for web resources on your behalf.

Your browser tells the proxy server which resources on the World Wide Web you want, and the proxy server gets those resources for you. When it has received them, the proxy server places a copy in local cache, and delivers the resources to you. If you want a resource that is already in the cache, the proxy server sends that copy to you instead of downloading it again, reducing the time you have to wait for it.

You must configure your browser and/or applications to use the proxy service. Access to the World Wide Web is not available through any other means.
