Phishing emails
Why have you sent me an e-mail asking for my user name and password?
We haven’t – this is almost certainly a phishing scam. Phishing is an attempt by fraudsters to 'fish' for personal information such as the login details you use for work. Someone can send you an email which appears to come from the University. The email asks you to click on a link and/or to confirm your username or password - in this way they obtain your details.
If they can successfully obtain anybody’s login details, they can use these to gain access to your e-mail account and, typically, use it to generate more spam. It is also possible that they could use the login details to mount an attack on the University’s IT systems.
IT Services will never send you an e-mail asking you to confirm your user name and password.
You should therefore never respond to any e-mail which asks for your account details. If in doubt about an e-mail, delete it without opening it. This caution should apply to all unexpected emails with links or attachments.
If you have responded to this sort of e-mail or think someone has obtained your login details, please contact the IT Support Centre, so that we can investigate. It is not necessary to report phishing scams that you haven’t responded to.
If you have been directed to this page from an e-mail you have received, then please note the above and do not respond to any further requests for your user details.
