What is UWE ResNet?
UWE ResNet is the UWE Residential Network Service.
If you live in one of the halls of residence listed below, you will be able to connect your computer via a wired connection to the University network from your room. Please note that UWE ResNet is not a wireless connection.
Please follow the instructions listed in this guide to connect to UWE ResNet.

To access the web pages, you may need to use a computer in any of the computer rooms on the UWE Campuses or any machine already connected to UWE ResNet, if the instructions in this guide are not sufficient.

What can I use UWE ResNet for?
• Browse the World Wide Web• Send and receive email
• Use the myUWE portal and Blackboard services
• Use Instant Messaging
• Use Voice and Video calls with Skype
What is not allowed with UWE ResNet?
• Use Peer to Peer software• Download pornographic or offensive material
• Share copyrighted files
• Use MSN video/voice messaging
• Connect network devices eg wireless access point
• Run your own server
• Use UWE ResNet for any commercial activities and financial gain
• Gaming is not supported on UWE ResNet eg PS3 does not work on
What do I need to connect?
• A PC or laptop running Windows XP / Windows Vista / Windows 7. You may use other operating systems such as Mac or Linux. However, support will be more limited than the Windows operating systems' support.
• Antivirus software. Please ensure it is running and up-to-date.
• Windows firewall enabled
• A working Network card (not wireless), standard 10/100/1000 ethernet adapter (not a modem)
• A web browser. We recommend Internet Explorer 8.0 or above.

• Your username and password will be sent to your personal e-mail address from 1st August 2011. However, for many students, this may be after the confirmation of your examination results in mid-August. If you have not provided us with your personal e-mail address, you will be able to pick these up from your faculty office reception, when you first attend for registration.Details are also available at www.uwe.ac.uk/resnet

Your Computer Security
Please take computer security seriously:
• Ensure that you have up-to-date anti-virus software running at all times on your computer.
• Ensure that your computer is firewall-enabled and updated.
• Ensure that your Windows software is up-to-date. To check this, please visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com for the latest service packs and security updates.
• Your computer should also be password-protected to ensure restricted access to information.
• Your laptop should be kept in a safe location (and not left unattended in a public place or a car).
• Shared folders - please ensure your shared folders are password-protected. Be aware that other people can see (and possibly amend or delete) the folders on the network.

Regulations Specific to UWE ResNet
• Users must not attach any device to the network socket marked ‘ResNet’ in their room apart from the computer.
• The use of any type of port scanner will be regarded as an attempt to gain unauthorised access to machines and will be penalised by disconnecting users from the UWE ResNet service.
• Users are responsible for their IT equipment and the security of their own computer(s). The University will under no circumstances be liable for damages to equipment or data.
• Users’ computers must have up-to-date
anti-virus software and a firewall installed
and running at all times.
• Damages to the network socket are the responsibility of the users. Users will have to pay for the replacement sockets.
• In case the network lead originally provided by IT Services is lost or damaged, the users will have to replace it themselves.
• The UWE ResNet service must only be used to access the University provided services and cannot be used for commercial and/or other purposes.
• Users must not use the UWE ResNet service to download pornographic or offensive material.
• The University network must not be used to download, upload, store, share or play copyright materials. Peer to peer applications must not be used when connected to UWE ResNet. For more information on copyright, please see www.cla.co.uk/
• All electronic communications relating to UWE ResNet between the University and the users (ie the students) will be through your University email account (eg firstname2.surname@live.uwe.ac.uk), which should be checked regularly by the users, and through the ITS web pages.
• Users must follow advice which may be issued from time to time by the UWE ResNet team (by email or via the ITS web pages) to install certain
security-related patches or upgrades.
• Any data stored and/or processed on your computer must comply with the University’s Data Protection policy, which can be found at www.uwe.ac.uk/its under the Policies section.
• The University reserves the right to disconnect users and computers, either permanently or temporarily, if breach of any of the Terms and Conditions occurs; or if machines and users are perceived to be a threat to the University network.
• Users and their machines will not be re-connected until the UWE ResNet team has been presented with evidence that the situation has been rectified and that no further attempts will be made to disrupt the service(s).
• The University reserves the right to pass on information about a potential breach of UWE ResNet’s Terms and Conditions to any member of the University who may be affected or involved.
• A breach of these Terms and Conditions may result in disciplinary action, as governed by the University Regulations and IT Policies.
UWE ResNet’s Condition of Service
• The provision of a particular bandwidth connection to the user does not guarantee any minimum available bandwidth. However, the University will do its utmost to ensure reasonable bandwidth is available.
• The University will endeavour to provide a continuous connection. However, acceptance of these Terms & Conditions does not guarantee continuous availability.
• The service may be unavailable for brief periods to allow network and general IT maintenance to take place. The UWE ResNet team will endeavour that users have been given sufficient notice.
• Maintenance periods will be published on the ITS web pages. Please check the web pages regularly for notification of planned maintenance.
The Terms and Conditions listed above may be amended from time to time. We recommend that you regularly check the Terms and Conditions published on the ITS web pages (www.uwe.ac.uk/its) under the Policies section.
